How to Extract Text from PDF Documents

Extracting text from PDF files allows you to reuse report content, copy tables into spreadsheets, or analyze document text without manually retyping paragraphs. FreeFileTool uses Mozilla's pdf.js library to read font vector data directly inside your browser memory.

Important Limitations: Scanned / Image-Only PDFs

Please note: If your PDF was created by a physical paper scanner or contains photos of documents, it consists of bitmap image layers rather than embedded font characters. Scanned PDFs do not contain a selectable text layer and cannot be converted to text without specialized Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Upload PDF: Click or drag your PDF file into the drop zone.
  2. Automatic Parsing: The client engine iterates through each page, pulling embedded text blocks.
  3. Copy or Export: Click "Copy Text" to save to clipboard or "Download .txt File" to save as a plain text document.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my PDF extract no text?

If your PDF was created from a physical scanner or image file without Optical Character Recognition (OCR), it contains scanned bitmap images rather than embedded font glyphs. Scanned PDFs do not contain a selectable text layer.

Is my PDF text uploaded to any server?

No. All text parsing and extraction are executed locally inside your browser memory using pdf.js. No document text or statistics are ever sent to remote servers.

Can I download the extracted text as a text file?

Yes! You can copy the extracted text to your clipboard with a single click or save it as a UTF-8 .txt document.
