Understanding Color Spaces & Formats
Digital displays render colors by combining red, green, and blue light channels. However, software applications, UI design systems, and web stylesheets use different mathematical representations (color models) to define colors effectively.
1. HEX Color Codes
Hexadecimal color notation represents colors using a six-digit hexadecimal value preceded by a hash symbol (#RRGGBB). The first pair represents Red, the second Green, and the third Blue, with values ranging from 00 (0 intensity) to FF (255 intensity).
2. RGB & RGBA
RGB explicitly lists integer values from 0 to 255 for Red, Green, and Blue (e.g. rgb(56, 189, 248)). RGBA adds a fourth floating-point parameter between 0.0 (transparent) and 1.0 (opaque) for alpha channel transparency.
3. HSL (Hue, Saturation, Lightness)
HSL models color in a cylindrical coordinate system:
- Hue (0°–360°): The angle on the standard color wheel (0° = Red, 120° = Green, 240° = Blue).
- Saturation (0%–100%): The intensity or purity of the color (0% is grayscale, 100% is vibrant).
- Lightness (0%–100%): The amount of light (0% is black, 50% is pure color, 100% is white).
4. HSV / HSB (Hue, Saturation, Value/Brightness)
Commonly used in graphic design software like Photoshop and Figma, HSV replaces Lightness with Value (brightness relative to white light).
Frequently Asked Questions
What color models are supported by this converter?
FreeFileTool converts between HEX (#RRGGBB / #RRGGBBAA), RGB (Red, Green, Blue), HSL (Hue, Saturation, Lightness), and HSV/HSB (Hue, Saturation, Value) color models.
How does the HSL color model differ from RGB?
RGB defines colors by blending intensities of red, green, and blue light (ideal for screens). HSL describes colors based on human perception: Hue (color angle on a 360° wheel), Saturation (vibrancy %), and Lightness (brightness %).
What is 8-digit HEX color encoding?
An 8-digit HEX code (e.g. #38BDF8FF) appends two extra hexadecimal digits at the end to specify the Alpha (opacity) channel, where 00 is completely transparent and FF is fully opaque.
Are color conversions exact across all formats?
Yes, mathematical algorithms map coordinates between sRGB, HSL, and HSV spaces with full floating-point precision, rounding clean values for CSS output.
